Summer is here and the holiday season is upon us! The sun is shining, people are out more and the city is vibrating with all sorts of things one can do during the summer. Some wait all year around for summer in Cape Town, and we cannot argue it is a fantastic time to be in the Mother City. Here is 5 things XO recommends to absolutely do this season.
SUNDOWNERS AT CAPE TOWN BEST VIEW SPOTS
Who does not like a warm and lovely evening in a city filled with beautiful people? Bars and restaurants are calling your name! It’s time to trade pants for light skirts or shorts, closed shoes for open ones and relax. How about a drink while watching the sun go down over the mother city? Pink and orange hues usually fill the sky during the summer so don’t miss out. Give your friends and call and meet them in some of Cape Town’s best view spots, looking over the ocean or the twinkling city. These are a couple of easily accessible address we recommend:

It sounds scary but it’s really not! It’s closer to the most fantastic thing you will ever do it in your life and if you have the times and means to do it please just do yourself a favour and book it! You are completely taken care of and guided through the experience. Seeing Cape Town from this angle is something extraordinary. The landing is usually really smooth and enjoyable; the takeoff can take a little bit of time depending on the wind, it has to be perfect for you to takeoff. You get the entire flight recorded on a go pro, which you can keep as a souvenir and show off, to all your friends with! It’s just awesome.
KIRSTENBOSH CANDLE LIGHT
Think of a beautiful garden setting, in glow stick light and the melodious sound of Christmas Carols and you will have an inkling of how fabulous festive Carols at Kirstenbosh will be this year. So pack your own picnic basket and let’s go! It’s all about getting in the mood for Christmas and relaxing on the garden lawns you’re your friends and family. The event has been popular for more than 20 years and also raises funds for charities in and around Cape Town. The event usually starts at 19:45, the gates open at 18:00 and tickets must be presented at the entrance of the event. There will be entertainment from 18:30 to 19:45 and the event will end at 21:30. This year the show will happen on the 15th, 16th, 17th & 18th of December. Parking is available in the normal Gardens parking areas and overflows onto Rhodes Drive when full.

We might not have the snow this side but strawberry season is upon us and we are going to take advantage of it! Strawberry picking is just so much fun and it’s a great activity for all ages, and of course children will love it. Each person entering the strawberry fields must purchase a container available in-store and go crazy and pick strawberries until your container is full. There are so big, sweet and juicy! People usually come home with so much of it that jam making or strawberry tart usually follows. Bring comfortable shoes, sunscreen, a hat and a big smile for a great experience. We believe it is a great experience to bring the family together and changes from the usual family lunch at the restaurant. Booking is not required for small groups so take a drive and let us know how it was! We recommend the Polkadraai Farm, situated near stellenbosh (+/-30 minutes from Cape Town).

THE GALILEO OPEN AIR CINEMA
Have you ever been to an open air cinema on a warm summer night? If not, then you should definitely put the Galileo Cinema on your Cape Town bucket list. Time let you cuddle up and be entertained! Every event is a unique experience that starts at 6pm on weekdays, 5pm on Saturdays and 4pm on Sundays. The doors swing open to a festive market of mouth-watering artisanal food and drinks on sale, interactive games, lively music and an unforgettable vibe. Running from Tuesday to Friday and selected Saturdays and Sundays, it’s the perfect setting (and excuse) for a memorable evening with friends, a ridiculously romantic date, intimate birthday party or work social.
For the love of all things Christmassy, The Galileo opens its doors for an unforgettable Christmas evening. After you have over-eaten and taken that imperative Christmas nap, head to Kirstenbosch Gardens for a feel-good film and relaxation after the Christmas rush. On the 25th of December, “Elf” will be screened at 8:30 pm at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens on Rhodes Drive in Newlands. Tickets costs between R79-R159, money well spent in our opinion!
